Located in the vibrant city of Surrey, Historic Stewart Farm stands as a tribute to the pioneering spirit of John and Annie Stewart. Originally from Scotland, John married Quebecois Annie Davidson in Nanaimo in 1884, eventually settling in Surrey to raise their family.
The iconic farmhouse, constructed in the early 1900s, was a charming yet modest home—reflective of the times. While it may not have been the largest farmhouse, it served as a gathering place for family and friends. With just their two sons, which was considered a small number of children for the time, the Stewarts often relied on neighbors and local work crews during the busy harvest season. They farmed 440 acres, which included not only the land visitors see today but also additional parcels across the Nicomekl River, where two barns once stood.
In 1984, recognizing the significance of the Stewart property, the municipality of Surrey purchased 54 acres to preserve this vital piece of local history. Now operated by the Heritage Services Division of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department, Historic Stewart Farm is designated as both a city and provincial heritage site.
The farm offers a glimpse into the life of early Surrey settlers, showcasing traditional farming practices and the way of life these settlers experienced. Visitors can explore the restored farmhouse and grounds, gaining a deeper appreciation for the hard work and commitment that shaped the region.
