Nestled in the heart of British Columbia’s Thompson Country, Ashcroft Manor Ranch—also known as Ashcroft Ranch—stands as a testament to the province’s rich colonial history. Established by Clement Francis Cornwall, who would later serve as Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, and his brother Henry Cornwall, the ranch became an iconic landmark. Today, its historic buildings sit adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway, just west of the Canadian Pacific Railway’s main line. The railway’s Ashcroft Station, named after the estate, eventually gave rise to the present-day village of Ashcroft, located just below on the Thompson River.
A Hub of British Aristocratic Culture
During its prime, Ashcroft Manor was more than just a ranch—it was a social hub for British high society in the region. Known for its fox-hunting parties, racehorses, and distinguished gatherings, the manor played host to some of the early province’s most notable figures. The Cornwall brothers brought a touch of British aristocratic life to the rugged landscapes of the Interior, making Ashcroft Manor a well-known destination for entertainment and leisure.
Historic Structures and Surrounding Landscape
Among the ranch’s notable features is a sod building dating back to 1863, which once provided accommodations for Chinese workers. This structure remains a part of the estate’s historical narrative, offering insight into the diverse labor force that contributed to British Columbia’s early development.
The ranch’s influence also extends to the surrounding geography. The Cornwall Hills, a low mountain range between the Thompson River and the upper Hat Creek basin, bear the estate’s name. Similarly, Cornwall Creek, a tributary of the Thompson River, serves as another lasting reminder of the ranch’s legacy.
Today, Ashcroft Manor Ranch remains an important historical site, preserving the story of British settlement and high society in the Interior. Though its grandeur has faded with time, its legacy continues to shape the identity of the region.
